The Most Common Dental Health Myths on the Internet
Explained by Dr. Alejandro Mora, Biological Dentist at TRYBE
If you’ve ever searched a dental question online, you’ve seen it: confident opinions, viral clips, and hot takes that sound like facts. The problem is that oral health is not a trend. It’s biology.
In a recent TRYBE video, Dr. Alejandro Mora walks through the dental myths we see most on social media and hear directly from patients. Here are the big ones, explained in a simple way, with the logic behind biological dentistry.
Myth 1: Fluoride Is Safe
Fluoride is neurotoxic. There’s no way around it.
Kids swallow toothpaste. Studies link fluoride use to lowered IQ, even in small amounts. Adults absorb it through gums and cheeks, which act like sponges. Chronic exposure adds up.
Hydroxyapatite is a natural remineralization alternative. It works without poisoning your nervous system.
Myth 2: Root Canals Save Teeth
Root canals don’t save anything. They create dead structures in your jaw.
After the procedure, the tooth is no longer alive. It’s hollow, filled with inorganic material. You can’t fully sterilize it. Bacteria, fungus, chronic immune activation. All hiding in a tooth you think is fine.
The biological alternative? Remove the infected tooth, clean the site properly, replace with a biocompatible zirconia implant. No dead tissue. No chronic infection.
Myth 3: Bleeding Gums Are Normal
Bleeding gums are an open portal to your bloodstream.
Healthy gums are pink, painless, and don’t bleed when you brush or eat. Gingivitis starts as swelling and redness. Too much plaque. Too much bacteria. Your gums respond by pulling back.
Better oral hygiene helps. Professional cleaning helps. Oil pulling with coconut or olive oil reduces bacteria naturally. Swish for 3-5 minutes in the morning. Dispose in the trash, not your sink.
Myth 4: Mercury Fillings Are Harmless
Mercury amalgam fillings are 50% mercury. They release vapor every time you chew, clench, or drink something warm.
People walk around with these fillings for 25+ years. That vapor gets inhaled. It gets swallowed. Chronic exposure leads to neurological disease: Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, memory loss, brain fog, gut dysbiosis.
Mercury is more toxic than arsenic.
TRYBE is SMART-certified by the IAOMT to remove mercury safely. Patients wear oxygen masks. We use latex-free dental dams, high-speed suction, air aspirators. Every step protects you from vapor exposure.
We replace with ceramic inlays. Zero toxicity. Perfect color match. No immune interference.
Myth 5: Brushing Harder Cleans Better
Brushing hard destroys your gums.
Soft tissue recedes from constant trauma. Once your gums pull back, they expose parts of your teeth never meant to be exposed. Sensitivity follows. Damage compounds.
Use a soft-bristle brush. Gentle pressure. Better technique beats brute force.
Myth 6: Mouthwash Is Necessary
Most commercial mouthwashes contain fluoride. Some kill your oral microbiome and disrupt gut health.
Unless you find a truly natural product with safe ingredients, skip it. Mouthwash isn’t necessary for oral health.
Myth 7: Wisdom Teeth Must Always Be Removed
Not true.
If your wisdom teeth fit properly, chew correctly, and function well, there’s no reason to remove them. Most people don’t have space. The teeth come in sideways, impacted, pushing other teeth forward.
That’s when removal makes sense. But it’s not a blanket rule.
Myth 8: X-Rays Are Dangerous
Digital X-rays use minimal radiation.
Without imaging, you’re diagnosing blind. Clinical examination only reveals so much. Hidden infections, bone loss, cavitations—they don’t show up without imaging.
Modern X-rays are safe. Patients and staff wear protection. The radiation exposure is negligible compared to the risk of missing critical diagnoses.
Myth 9: The Mouth and Body Are Separate
This is the most dangerous myth of all.
Infections in your mouth don’t stay local. They spread to your brain, heart, gut, liver, kidneys. Chronic oral inflammation triggers systemic disease.
Your mouth is the gateway. Biological dentistry treats the whole system, not just the tooth.
Myth 10: Composite Fillings and Amalgam Are Equal
Mercury fillings release neurotoxic vapor. Composites are safer, especially BPA-free alternatives.
At TRYBE, we use only BPA-free composites. No BIS-GMA. No immune triggers. Safer materials. Better outcomes.
Your mouth wasn’t made for metal. Your dentistry shouldn’t be either.

Most dental myths persist because they are repeated, not because they are true.
At TRYBE, our goal is not to follow trends. It’s to reduce toxic load, remove sources of chronic inflammation, and support the body as a connected system.
If you have questions about your oral health, materials in your mouth, or habits you’ve been told are “normal,” we’re always open to the conversation.
Your mouth matters more than you’ve been told.
