“I’ve Been Gaslit for Years. Told I’m Crazy.” – A Conversation with Marcie White

Editor’s Note: The following conversation has been lightly edited and condensed for clarity and readability. Marcie White’s story and experiences remain authentic to her original testimonial.

Marcie White traveled from Chicago to Costa Rica with one goal: fix her broken front tooth with a metal-free implant. What she discovered at TRYBE changed everything.

We sat down with Marcie to hear her story.

TRYBE: Marcie, tell us a bit about yourself and what brought you here.

Marcie: I’m from Chicago originally, where I was born and raised. I had a trauma in my mouth many years ago—30 years ago—where it broke my jaw and many teeth. So I had a root canal in the front tooth, and then a little bit over a year ago, it just broke out one day randomly.

In the meantime, I had learned all about much more about natural dentistry and the dangers of root canals. So I wanted to be very careful in who I chose to fix the problem.

Also, I am very sensitive and reactive to many things. So I didn’t want any metal in my body. I’ve had very severe reactions in the past to metal. So I was looking specifically for a biological dentist that could do a zirconia implant.

TRYBE: How long did that search take?

Marcie: I spent almost a year researching. I worked with a consultant, a dental consultant in the United States, who helps to match clients with dentists and surgeons appropriately.

The only two that I found anywhere after a year of searching and joining several Facebook groups and working with this consultant and asking everywhere was here and another one in Portugal.

TRYBE: That’s quite a limited field.

Marcie: Right. Even if I had chosen one of the ones that I found, which would have been not ideal, they were much more expensive than to come down here. I can do the whole trip and have a nice vacation for less, even, than the cost of getting it done there. So it all worked out. Absolutely. Perfect. It couldn’t be better.

TRYBE: What happened when you came in for your evaluation?

Marcie: I had done some frequency work that week prior before coming here, more general diagnostic work. And it was really wonderful because I had the two different diagnostics confirming each other.

I had thought that there was probably an infection resident from the root canal. But what I was completely unaware of was that I had four cavitations. I never knew that I had a problem with them.

But they discovered that I had all four had cavitations, and particularly the two on the bottom were severely necrotic and infected.

TRYBE: Had you been dealing with symptoms for a while?

Marcie: In Chile and in the States, I had spent several years going through many top specialists—neurologists and immunologists and everything. A lot of, “Well, you have this nerve damage,” or “You have this, the tests are a little off here, blah blah blah. This is way off, but we don’t really know what’s going on.”

So here’s a referral to a psychiatrist. Go get some happy pills so you feel better about this whole situation.

TRYBE: Wow.

Marcie: So then when they found all these cavitations, it’s amazing. And it remains to be seen, but the next day after the surgery—which was quite a bit more involved than I had anticipated when I came here—I just felt like a cloud lifted.

TRYBE: The very next day?

Marcie: I looked in the mirror and I was shocked because I was, you know, nervous. I warned my son who was with me, “You know, I might look like a black and blue bowling ball or something in the morning. I might look very kind of scary.”

I feel like I look 10 years younger or something. I just felt like a weight lifted. Incredibly.

I thought I was just fixing my tooth from an old trauma, and I think I hit the jackpot and I’m solving much more of my whole health problems.

TRYBE: What was your experience like with the team?

Marcie: Well, it’s been amazing. I don’t have enough superlatives to say how happy I am and how grateful I am.

Everybody has been wonderful. I felt perfectly comfortable because I speak fluent Spanish, but after coming here, I realized it was absolutely unnecessary. I would recommend it equally to anybody who didn’t speak a word of Spanish. Everyone’s English is impeccable here. So anyone who has any hesitation about that, there’s no problem.

I feel like it has been very compassionate, very patient. Absolutely patient. I am a person with many questions. Always.

Marcie: I’m very sensitive and very detailed and very curious. And they’ve been very patient to take the time to answer all my questions.

And I feel like there’s been a lot of common ground, around the same page of understanding. And I feel very, very comfortable and very confident, like I’m in very good hands.

TRYBE: It sounds like being heard was almost as important as the treatment itself.

Marcie: One thing I’d like to add is that also for me, it’s been—I want to say, you know, a large percentage of what’s been so amazing—and I really think the healing power of coming here was to find people who understood, who listened to me, who heard me.

And I’ve been gaslit for years, told I’m crazy. Blah blah blah, you know, all this stuff. And just treated very unkindly.

Feeling like contained and held and heard and understood and like you get it—yes, I’m not crazy—like that has been miraculous. It’s just a gift. Absolutely.
